Five for Friday! 07/06/13

It's almost the end of the semester, folks! Countdown to the holidays has begun. :) Before I head off to bed early in preparation for a big weekend writing report cards I've got just enough time to link up with Doodle Bugs to share my random Five for Friday.

1. We're learning all about the seasons and the weather in Science and this week was all about Summer!

This is the Summer corner of the classroom showing off the cute crafts we worked on.  Painted ice creams and bright shining suns! The big sun and clouds with raindrops were the original decorations but they have been taken over by the kids' work. :)

2. What to do when you've too much to do?  Procrastinate, of course!

I spent a few hours in my classroom last Sunday trying to get ahead with planning and reports, but instead made this little fella. He is our 'Number Monster' - he asks to eat numbers that are more than, less than, equal to certain numbers, or he might ask to eat 2 numbers that add to make a specific amount.  He is very demanding!  The kidlets feed him numbers written or drawn on slips of paper.  The Number Monster is of course besties with the Alphabet Monster.

3. Yep, lots of procrastinating this week!  I use clipboards from time to time when the kidlets are working on the floor in their groups.  We have a tonne of old ones in Prep - and the ones I had been using originally looked like this:

After a bit of prettying up they now look like this:

A coat of spray paint and some rainbow Scotch tape made them much cuter... and saved me some money in buying new ones!

4. Don't you just l-o-v-e it when your kidlets make you proud?

We had some unstructured time this week so I could finish up some assessment checklisting.  I'd put out some activities for the kids to work on - maths and literacy games, fine motor tasks, phonics apps, a colour by number etc. - but was planning to just ignore the tomfoolery that I was sure would happen while they were supposed to be working and I was distracted. :)  Those little sweeties worked carefully and stayed focused the whole time, even though I was occupied and not giving them any direction.  I was so impressed and proud of their maturity. The game in the photo is one that my Preppies absolutely love, and the ice cream theme fit in nicely with our Summer week! You can grab the pre-primer version from my TpT store, and I'll hopefully have the primer words done this weekend. :)

5. Bargain of the week - cupcake timer from Aldi.

Pack up time has never been so exciting! :)

I hope everyone is enjoying their last few weeks of school, or summer break depending where in the world you are!

Lauren

  1. Hahaha I love your tissue box monsters- and the tag line... what do you do when you have too much to do... procrastinate!

When is your semester over? I'm in NZ and this term doesn't finish for another five weeks

    1. Hi Serena,

I am a master procrastinator!! :) The kidlets love the new monster though.

Our last day for the semester is 21st June, and we go back for a week of student free days on the 8th July. You must have started your school year much later than us to have 5 more weeks left!

  2. It's so lovely to find somebody that likes to procrastinate as much as myself! I really need to spend some time in my room to get it all tidy but we're not allowed in on the weekends. It's probably a good thing though because I would spend ALL of my free time at school otherwise haha

We're doing weather in Term 4 so I'm enjoying seeing all of the fun things you've been up to. The paper plate suns are too cute. You can bet that I will be 'borrowing' some of your ideas over the holidays - 9 school days to go for me! Good luck with your reports - I stocked up on chocolate and lollies so I could get through mine ;)

    1. Hi Casey,

How odd that you aren't allowed in on the weekends. Is that a school policy or an Ed Qld one? We can go in whenever as long as we turn the alarms off - lots of teachers prefer to do things like write reports at school because there's less distractions than at home. I've only ever been in a few times though - like you said, you could be there all the time!!

The paper plate suns were so easy and the kidlets loved them. Hopefully I can be helpful and you can steal another idea or two from me! :)

  3. First off, your room looks adorable. I can see that you are very artistic and allow those kiddos to do some fun activities. I also love your monsters. Great timer! Do your kids overwind your timers like mine? Drives me crazy!!

    1. Hi Sandy,

Thanks for stopping by! :) I do love to let the kids express themselves with art and craft - I love that when I give them an idea and some paint or other materials they go ahead and do a much better job than if I had told them step by step what to do. Seeing their personalities in their work is always so fun. :)

I've only used the time this week so had told the kidlets not to touch it... of course some of them did and we had a few random bell rings now and then!

  4. Lauren,
Thanks for linking up with me! You are a very creative procrastinator! I also have reports to due, but here I am, blogging and doing everything but.
Lucky you to be in Queensland. My partner and I are hoping to emigrate to Aus in a few years.
